A magnificent golden statue of Buddha sits in the temple of Wat Traimit, located in Bangkok, Thailand. While its origins aren’t clear, it bears resemblance to a style prominent during the Sukhothai period; it’s likely that it was made 700 years ago. At some point — likely 350 years ago, during the Burmese–Siamese War — people covered the golden statue in stucco and terracotta for protection from damage, and to hide it in plain sight. It remained so until 1954, when an army was transporting it to Bangkok. The terracotta began to fall away and the gold beneath was revealed.

The truth of the golden Buddha was lost for centuries, for its own protection; in many ways, we also learn to cover up our own truths and personalities, from the very painful external forces that could hurt us. As we grow up, we learn to protect our inner children, or our madmen, and to edit and cover our true feelings; over the years, we grow less spontaneous and more structured.

Since creativity is one of the most important career skills of the future, it’ll be just as important that we let go of these ideas we picked up to protect our egos, and to tap into our inner spontaneous selves as well.
